#1. Understanding the Process
Often people don’t think of it this way, but hiring a photographer is like hiring a mechanic to fix your car or a contractor to build your home. Really, it is also the same as commissioning any artist. You hire them for their skills, talent, and reputation. You trust them to deliver their best work. You also trust them to be transparent and charge you a fair rate. Photography works in the exact same way whether it’s here in the Broad Run, VA area or across the country.
You wouldn’t hire a contractor and expect them to build your home, renovate your kitchen, or add a room for free or at a steep discount, would you? Would you take your car to a friend who’s a mechanic and ask them to fix it for free and throw in the parts as well?

We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful state! We love using the landscapes surrounding the Ashburn, VA area as a backdrop for many of our portraits. As photographers, it’s like having our own private library of scenery and landscapes!
We recently came across this really interesting article, “18 Beautiful Places in Virginia You Didn’t Know Existed,” about some little known or even unknown places across our state. We poured through the sites online imagining ourselves in each one – with our camera equipment, of course! We are photographers, after all! Some of these sites could make stunning backdrops for portraits.

National Geographic is one of our favorite photographic sites. Their awe-inspiring landscapes and gorgeous photography is truly breathtaking. I don’t know about you, but I feel like I don’t travel enough. And visiting places through National Geographic’s photographs has always been fun for me. I look at them and say, “Someday I’d love to go there!”

Art Lighting Tips to Light Family Portraits
In deciding how to light your family portraits, consider these few art lighting tips:
- You need enough light that your artwork is shown to its best advantage but not so much light that your artwork is harmed. As beautiful as natural light looks on your original artwork, UV rays can damage it and cause pigments to fade. Therefore, don’t display your artwork in direct natural light.

We’re all coffee drinkers here — except for a rogue tea drinker! When I saw this article on the best way to make coffee at home, I just had to share it.
A lot of us have tried different ways of making our coffee, but this is a cool experiment with several different kinds of coffee drinkers as participants: An espresso lover; an all-day-long drinker; an old-school cream and sugar type; a non-coffee drinker; a champion barista; and a budding coffee nerd, the writer himself. The results just might surprise you!
