Things the Happiest Families Have in Common | Northern VA Family Photographer

Is there a secret formula to creating and fostering family happiness? Can we somehow bottle it? An interesting blog post was written by Eric Barker, “6 things the happiest families all have in common.” As a specialist in family pictures in the Reston, VA area, we are always interacting with families – happily, we might add. However, if this fellow knew something we did not, we wanted to hear it!

Alas, there isn’t a magic formula to ensure your family’s happiness. There are, however, some key things families can do in the pursuit of collective and individual happiness. The article offered six reasonable and achievable tips based on scientific research, according to Barker.

As a photography studio, we love to work closely with our clients to produce extraordinary family portraits. Building relationships with them, and getting to know them moves us closer to better and better pictures. This is one reason we take the time to write this blog! Here are a few tips offered in the blog post worth reading. They certainly got us thinking.

1. Dinner time matters: There’s a lot of research indicating that families who eat dinner (really any meal) together are less likely to produce children who drink, do drugs, smoke, get pregnant, commit suicide, or develop eating disorders. According to the article (and others we have read), families eating at least one meal a day together have children with “larger vocabularies, better manners, healthier diets, and higher self-esteem.” It doesn’t matter which meal you sit down to enjoy with your children. Just pick at least one a day.

2. Roots: Children familiar with their family history and family narrative possess a stronger “sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem, and the more successfully they believed their families functioned.” Photography helps provide families with a sense of real history and roots. Photos passed down through the generations recall relatives long gone but still remembered. Today’s family photos convey to children a sense of family. In the future, those same photos become real memories and are examples of roots. Photos can be invaluable in a family’s narrative and story.

3. Stress: Parental stress affects your children. One survey found that children asked what wish they wanted for their parents, the children overwhelmingly said they wanted their parents to be less stressed.

4. Check lists: Families creating checklists are happier. It’s best to write lists of things that tend to go wrong such as packing for trips, grocery store visits, school supplies, etc. Checklists help a family stay on track without stressing over the possibility of forgetting something. Check it out!

5. Let kids make some decisions: “Scientists have found that kids who plan their own time, set weekly goals, and evaluate their work build up their prefrontal cortex and other parts of the brain that help them exert greater cognitive control over their lives. These so-called executive skills aid children with self-discipline, avoiding distractions, and weighing the pros and cons of their choices.”

6. Grandma makes a difference: Study after study shows that children who spend time with their grandmothers have less stress, are better adjusted, have better manners, and tend to be more compassionate.

Although we instinctively knew some of these, we found them all very interesting! We hope you did as well.

Tip 9, Understand Your Photographer: Don’t invite them expecting free photos | Northern VA Family Photographer

Tip 9, Understand Your Photographer: Don’t invite them expecting free photos | Northern VA Family Photographer

Tip 9, Understand Your Photographer: Don’t invite them expecting free photos | Northern VA Family Photographer

We are continuing our blog series “How to Understand and Work With Your Photographer Friends,” and we’re on Tip #9: Don’t invite your photographer friends expecting free photos. This can be another touchy issue among photographers and their friends. We have built a reputation throughout Brambleton, VA and surrounding towns for warm, candid and timeless family photography. We invest a lot of time and energy into planning each photo session and giving our clients their ideal portraits.

Beyond our clients, we have personally invested a lot into photography as our livelihood. How could we not, when we love doing portrait photography so much? However, we do like to have a personal life as well! We can’t imagine being invited to a big anniversary bash as guests only to arrive and have the host ask us why we didn’t bring our camera equipment! It might sound a bit farfetched to you, but many photographers will say it’s happened to them at some point in their careers and probably several times.

Keep Friendship and Business Separate

Don’t invite a photographer friend to your event simply because you expect (hope) they’ll photograph your event for free! If you want to keep a friend, then don’t expect free work. Don’t invite a professional photographer friend as a guest expecting them to work the event. How can they enjoy the event as your guest if they’re working it?!

If you love your friend’s work, then hire them! It’s the greatest compliment you can give them. Keep in mind, though, that when a photographer is shooting an event, they’re not a guest. They’re not enjoying the event like a guest because you’re very focused on their work.

We’re always available to be your guest or be your photographer! We love both, and we especially love family photography in the Brambleton, VA and surrounding towns.

9 Maryland Towns You Should Spend More Time In | Northern VA Family Photographer

9 Maryland Towns You Should Spend More Time In | Northern VA Family Photographer

9 Maryland Towns You Should Spend More Time In | Northern VA Family Photographer

Photographers will tell you that there’s so much more to Maryland than Baltimore or nearby Washington, DC or our backyard of Leesburg, VA! If you haven’t set out to explore any of these nine small towns, you could be missing out. They run the gamut from waterfront to sleepy town. Grab your car keys and get going! Don’t forget your camera!

Ellicott City:

This reportedly “haunted” town is situated between Baltimore and DC. From its stone mill buildings to it shopping and a brewpub, you can’t go wrong in this town that has retained much of its historic charm.
If you’re a whiskey lover, check out Judge’s more than 250 varieties.

Berlin:

Not quite like its namesake in Germany, it’s still worth a visit for its architecture and natural setting. Often overlooked by beachgoers heading to the Coast, those who do stop will find historic buildings and a relaxed feeling to this small town. Check out Toy Town Antiques or the old Globe Theater dating back to 1917. The Runaway Bride and Tuck Everlasting both filmed here and no wonder! It’s beautiful!

Hampstead:

If you love photography and history, grab your camera when you visit Hampstead where you can travel back in time along Main St. Hampstead. Stately colonial homes, historic police station, and antique shops dot the small downtown. History buffs will enjoy the Civil War markers throughout town that will take you up to Gettysburg an hour north.

Crisfield:

You can’t go any further south without ending up in Chesapeake Bay. Bordered by Tangier Sound and the Pocomoke River, this is a water-lover’s paradise. It’s referred to as the “crab capital of the world” (we haven’t confirmed this claim, but you can try)! There’s every water sport including fishing, marsh sanctuaries, maritime museums, and, believe it or not, a crab derby every Labor Day! Don’t forget to try the hard blue crabs while in town – to eat, not race!

Eastport:

So near, and yet so far! Eastport is just over the bridge with a far more laid-back feel than Annapolis. You won’t lack for history or beauty here, though. You’ll enjoy the view back toward Annapolis in this town with a resort-like feel. Plenty to do in town from kayak rentals to the Annapolis Maritime Museum and oyster festivals.

Takoma Park:

This might be a DC suburb, but you leave everything behind in this hippie-vibe town. There’s vegetarian-friendly restaurants, vintage clothing stores, yoga studios, and music shops. If that doesn’t sound granola enough for you, check out their annual jazz and folk festivals.

Havre de Grace:

Halfway between Baltimore and Wilmington, Havre de Grace is like a mini New England beach town. From it’s own boardwalk to its newly restored Concord Point Lighthouse. If you love duck decoys, you’ll love the Maritime Museum or Decoy Museum filled with nearly 3,000 wooden decoy ducks.

Monkton:

Drive 20 minutes out from Baltimore toward Monkton and you’ll hit horse country. Stately homes dating to the 1800’s, along with gorgeous countryside and horse farms make up this town. In the summer, you can rent an inner tube and float down the Gunpowder Falls.

Oakland:

This is Oakland, MD, not Oakland, CA – so there’s a big difference. If you love fall colors, head here. There are 54ft waterfalls gush in between the lush autumn leaves at Swallow Falls State Park. Deep Creek Lake here is the state’s largest body of water and a good place to jet ski, go boating, and tubing. Downton Oakland offers art, books, and an old fashioned ice cream parlor in an antique-filled shop.

As Leesburg, VA area family photographers, we’re always interested in hearing about previously not visited places in our state and our neighboring states. If you find or know of any special spots, we’d love to hear about them!

How to Safely Hang Wall Art – Without Damaging Your Walls! | Northern VA Family Photographer

How to Safely Hang Wall Art – Without Damaging Your Walls! | Northern VA Family Photographer

How to Safely Hang Wall Art – Without Damaging Your Walls! | Northern VA Family Photographer

It doesn’t take a photographer (or a rocket scientist) to tell you that we’ve all put nails into a wall only to realize that it’s either not a good spot for the piece or it is in the wrong place! So now that you’ve spent money on your cherished family photos, how do you hang them without damaging your walls? We’re often asked this by our clients in and around the Leesburg, VA area so we thought we’d put together some pointers!  (Keep in mind that our tips are only advice and you should always use your best judgment or hire a professional!)

Location

It’s important to carefully select where you would like to hang your portrait photography. You will want to ensure the portrait fits well into the space. It should not appear as too large or too small in comparison to the wall space.  Artwork that is too large for the space will overwhelm and look out of place. Artwork that is too small for the size of the wall will appear lost on the wall and will look even smaller.

Hang the portrait so that its center is at about average eye-level.  Average would be eye-level for an adult at about 5’3” in height. People often make the mistake of hanging art way too high!

If the piece is heavy, you will need to insert your nail or mounting hardware into a stud to safely hold the weight. A stud finder is the easiest way to find your stud. Otherwise, the old fashioned method of tapping on the wall will do it!

Placement

Having a tough time trying to decide where to hang the portrait on a wall? Use a mock-up using blank paper. The paper should be the same size as the portrait. Use multiple sheets taped together if you need to. Now you can temporarily place your mock-up onto the wall. Then step back at least two to three feet.

Mounting the Wall Art

Measure, measure, and measure again. Mark where you need to hammer your nail or where your drill holes will go. Keep in mind that if there is a wire on your piece for mounting it will change where your photo actually ends up hanging. In other words, pull the wire to see how long it extends once it hangs from the nail. Build that amount into your calculations when deciding where to put your nail.

Tools and Materials

Use the correct tools! Picture hanging kits are inexpensive and readily available. Lighter prints and frames should be fine with a nail into the sheetrock (also known as drywall). A plastic wall anchor mounted into the sheetrock can be used if the piece you’re hanging doesn’t weigh too much. To be on the safe side, use the stud if possible. If you use a stud, no plastic anchor will be needed, but you should use the proper mounting brackets to ensure a nail doesn’t give way in the middle of the night!

Heavier pieces will need a bracket or picture hanger. Portraits heavier than 25lbs. will need to be hung from a stud. A nail inserted into sheetrock will not hold it! Actually, no nail might hold it. Depending on the actual weight, you might need to use special hardware.

Any photographer will tell you that hanging photos isn’t complicated, especially if they’re not heavy. With a little preparation, you can easily hang your beautiful family photos without leaving your walls with dozens of unnecessary holes! However, if you’re ever in doubt, it’s best to hire a professional.

As part of our exceptional customer service, when a client purchases wall art, we offer hanging services!  We know how proud you are of your family portraits and how much you’d like to display them perfectly!

Tip #2 – How to Understand & Work With Your Photographer Friends | Don’t Ask For More Photos Than We Present | Northern VA Family Photographer

Tip #2 – How to Understand & Work With Your Photographer Friends | Don’t Ask For More Photos Than We Present | Northern VA Family Photographer

We hope you enjoyed our first tip in our ongoing series: How to Understand and Work with Your Photographer Friends because we’re back with Tip #2! We can’t remember a client in the Northern Virginia, Broad Run, VA or Ashburn Village, VA areas ever asking us this, but we have heard it has happened to other photographers!

So here’s the next tip.

Tip #2: Don’t ask for more photos than the ones we present to you.

We PROMISE the ones you’ve seen are the best ones there are and you’ll love what you see!

We can PROMISE you (yes, again) that we aren’t holding back spectacular pictures of you! Why would we do that?! We want to show you how gorgeous you look and how great your family photos turned out. We’re showing you the best there is in our professional and personal opinion. Asking us for the ones which didn’t make the cut would likely hurt our feelings (we do have feelings!) and is considered a no-no in the photography world.

Again, remember the mechanic and contractor analogies? Would they hold back on their most beautiful and best handiwork? Nope. And, we won’t either!

Before you come in to your photo session, we can assure you we’ve already done a lot of thinking, a lot of planning, and a lot of strategizing. We are only as good as our work. If a client isn’t happy, then neither are we! We put a lot of work into every single photo we do and every single photo session we have. We will always show you the very best of your images!

Stay tuned for Tip #3: Don’t Expect Free Photography.

If you live in the Northern Virginia, Broad Run, VA or Ashburn Village, VA area, reach out to us! We think you’ll like what you see in our photography!
