In today’s fast paced world it is becoming harder and harder to have family time when you have to juggle work, school, children’s activities and the daily household tasks. Having a family portrait is a way to spend quality time with your family and have images to look back on for decades to come!

The Eckert family came to our outdoor Northern VA studio in the shades of autumn when there is an energetic chill in the air. Camille and Tom along with their children, Noah and Georgia enjoyed posing on our gold sofa and having bubble time while relaxing on the back of our red truck. If you dread the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, family portraits makes unique and heartfelt gifts for family and friends.

Check out the Eckert family session and also go to our Facebook page and like us to see more candid family portraits!

Family portrait in living area

Many times clients want advice on where to hang big portraits and where to place smaller ones. Here are some quick rules of thumb to help you decide.

If you are hanging images in an area where people will be standing right next to them when they are viewing them, such as a hallway or entryway, then this is the perfect place to hang groupings of images, some smaller. These can be sized anywhere between 11×14 and 16×20. Anything bigger will cause the viewer to feel the need to back way up to be able to take it all in.

When designing a wall that is across the room and not as accessible, then it is better to plan for big images, larger than a 16×24, and even up to 36×48! That way, when guests walk into the room, they can easily see the images from far away and feel the energy and emotion that comes from the image. If you make the mistake of hanging small images on a far-away wall, then your guests will have to walk all the way across the room and sometimes really strain to see who or what is in the picture.

Picking your image size by the space in which it is going to be hung is the best way to enjoy the portraits you want to display. That’s why we use special software which allows us to show you wall groupings and concepts on snapshots of your very own walls!

Printed Professional prints

Are professional prints really better? Why can’t you just print all your professional images at the local grocery store? This is a great question and one that we hear quite often. So what’s the big deal about getting prints from a professional lab?! Well, here are a few reasons why professional prints are better.

1. Better skin tones. The look of skin tones on your images is very important to the picture. We’ve found that many times images printed on lower quality machines can make the skin look either too orange-y or too ash-y. However, when you’re getting your images from a professional lab, your skin tones will look exactly like the photographer edited them. Healthy, alive and real! This is because the professional labs calibrate their machines multiple times to make sure the colors are just right. Other printers don’t!

2. Better paper. When ordering professional prints, the paper your images are printed on is a much higher quality paper, and professional labs do everything they can to get the most color out of the paper they can. This results in more vibrant, true colors in your prints.

3. More options. Most printers that can be found at grocery stores will only have one type of paper and a few sizes to choose from. However, when working with a professional, you will find that, if you choose, you can print your image on many different types of papers and get some larger sizes.

Before and After School Snapshot

Whether it’s the first-day-of-school snapshot, the mid-year or last day, parents often pose their child in front of their home, backpack and smiles on! We wanted to share with you a few quick tips to help make the best of those memories!

1. Pull your child away from the wall! Lining up against the wall for a snapshot isn’t always the best composition. Instead, try having your child step forward, away from the wall quite a bit. This helps put the focus more on the child, and the wall is not so much a part of the photo any more.
2. Shoot in the shade. Many people think to get a well-lit snapshot, their photos should be taken with the subject in the sunlight. But the sunlight can be very harsh, create deep shadows and make your subject squint too much. Instead, find a great patch of shade and have your subject stand there.

You’ll be amazed at how much better your snapshots are if you following these two little tips!
